You don't have to take an exam to get a contractor's license. But you do have to prove you don't owe any taxes and that you have workers' compensation and liability insurance.

Electrician's license fees: The master exam and the license cost $50 each. The journeyman exam and license are $25 each. The Class B electrician exam and the license cost $40 each. All licenses expire March 31 each year.

Plumber's licenses fees: The exam and master license costs $200. The exam and journeyman license is $100. Both are good for one calendar year.
You can also qualify for the journeyman exam by passing a screening exam first if you have five years of plumbing work experience in a state which doesn't license plumbers.
The Board has reciprocity agreements with South Dakota, Minnesota, and Montana.

You don't need a North Dakota contractor's license to bid on a project, but if you win the contract you must get the appropriate North Dakota contractor license within ten days. Prequalification is good for one year.
